Spotlight Community Award

The 2026 Nebraska Planning Conference included award presentations to some very deserving individuals! We’ll be telling their stories one at a time. The City of David City is the recipient of NPZA’s Spotlight Community Award. Over the past five years, the city has completed a public planning and community engagement process for its 2040 Comprehensive Plan update.

David City packaged and adopted a significant Downtown Revitalization Plan through a dynamic process in partnership with Southeast Nebraska Development District and UNL CRP planning students. This project has led to a substantial redevelopment fund for the redevelopment of structures in the downtown area. Since the success of this UNL partnership, the City is partnering once again with the CRP and the Landscape Architecture program to develop a new Veterans Park area in the downtown area.
Included in these efforts are:

  • Construction of new John Deere store and repair facility and soybean plant which included a new $25,000,000 road and viaduct over the BNSF Railroad.
  • Completion of a new 16" water main
  • The City is in the process of replacing their waste treatment facility
  • Completion of an update to the water treatment plant
  • Slip lining of all the sewer mains
  • Reestablishment of a police department

Besides the activities undertaken by the City and the industrial uses, David City has seen also the relocation and remodeling of a historic structure into a larger Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art.

Congratulations!
